This 10 day Snæfellsnes South Coast & Landmannalaugar self-drive road trip, will take you to all the amazing highlights of the Southern and Western parts of Iceland and the incredible Landmannalaugar area. Highlights will include majestic glaciers, vast black sand beaches, boiling hot springs, picturesque waterfalls and many more interesting attractions. This self drive adventure is ideal for those who want to get the most out of their time in Iceland during summer.

You will start your journey by exploring Reykjavík city on your arrival day. Next you will head on to West Iceland where you will discover the amazing beauty of Snæfellsnes peninsula and the Borgarfjörður area. Snæfellsnes peninsula is often known as “miniature Iceland” due to the abundance of attractions it holds. Attractions include Kirkjufell mountain, Djúpalónssandur beach, Lóndrangar view point, Arnarstapi, Gatklettur rock formation, and many more. From there you will continue to Borgarfjöður area where you will visit one of the most historic places in Iceland, Reykholt. Other attractions in the area include Hraunfossar waterfalls, Deildartunguhver hot spring, and Surtshellir lava cave.

Next up is the Golden circle of Iceland. There you will be exploring world famous attractions. Þingvellir national park, a UNESCO world heritage site, is a sacred place for the Icelandic nation. It is the birth place of the oldest parliament in the world, Alþing (Althing), established in Þingvellir in 930. You will continue along the Golden circle and visit stunning attractions including, Kerið crater, Geysir geothermal area, Strokkur spouting hot spring, Gullfoss waterfall, Brúarhlöð gorge and more.

You will now venture into the highlands of Iceland and visit the otherworldly, Landmannalaugar area. The Landmannalaugar area offers incredible hiking options in the stunning landscape. Afterwards it is possible to enjoy a relaxing time in a geothermal hot spring located in the area.

The South Coast of Iceland is probably the most popular travel route in Iceland. It includes many amazing attractions with an incredibly easy access just of the main road. Attractions of the day include, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Gljúfrabúi waterfall, Skógafoss waterfall, Sólheimasandur plane wreck (optional hike), Dyrhólaey promontory, Reynisfjara black sand beach, and more. You will end the day somewhere around the beautiful town of Vík. Continuing along the South Coast will give you the chance to explore more amazing attractions like, Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, Skaftafell geopark, Vatnajökull national park, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the Diamond beach, and more.

Finally, you will explore the stunning Reykjanes peninsula and geopark. The peninsula holds geothermal areas, volcanic craters, sea cliffs, the Mid-Atlantic ridge, and other beautiful sights. Attractions like, Seltún geothermal area, Gunnuhver hot spring, Brimketill lava rock pool, Reykjanesviti lighthouse, and the Bridge between continents, will be on the your list for the day.

Day 1

Today is arrival day in Iceland. You will start by picking up your rental car at Keflavík international airport and start your Iceland adventure. You will spend your first day exploring the vibrant capital, Reykjavík city. The city has a lot to offer for everyone, great restaurants, cafe's, and bars, terrific shopping venues, interesting museum, and exiting exhibitions. You can also participate in activities like Whale watching or enjoying a relaxing stay at one of Iceland's luxurious geothermal baths, The Blue lagoon or the Sky lagoon.

Day 2

The amazing natural beauty of the Snæfellsnes peninsula awaits - You will start your day by driving to Borganes, a small town located in the Borgarfjörður fjord. From there you will drive through the lava fields of Eldborgarhraun where you can take a short hike up to the Eldborg crater. You will then proceed to drive along the south coast of the peninsula to Arnarstapi and Hellnar where you can add an optional caving expedition to Vatnshellir cave. After a refreshing stop there you will enter the Snæfellsnes National Park and drive under the Snæfellsjökull glacier. If conditions are good and you are driving a 4x4 car, it is possible to drive up to the glacier's edge and take a walk on the ice cap. You will spend the night in the Snæfellsnes area.

Day 3

You will continue your Snæfellsnes peninsula exploration. Now you will head to Stykkishólmur, a small, charming fishing town by the north coast of the peninsula. We highly recommend taking a boat ride out on the bay to observe the amazing wild life of the area. You will even get to taste freshly caught scallops and mussels right on the boat. From Stykkishólmur you will head towards Húsafell. On your way there you will make stops at the beautiful waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. In Húsafell you can also join an optional expedition to the man made ice cave in Langjökull glacier. You will spend the night in the Húsafell area.

Day 4

Today you will make your way to the Southern part of Iceland. Drive towards Reykjavík and make a turn to Þingvellir National Park, a UNSECO World Heritage Site. There you can witness the effects of the Eurasian and North American continental drift. We highly recommend a snorkeling or diving session in the Silfra fissure for those who are willing and able. There is nothing quite like the experience of snorkeling in the crystal clear waters between two continents. After your stay in Þingvellir you will head to the Geysir geothermal area and check out the spouting hot spring Strokkur before heading to the iconic Gullfoss waterfall. You will spend the night in the Flúðir area. If you are up for it, we recommend a trip to the Secret Lagoon near Flúðir where you can relax and rest tired bones before retiring to your accommodation.

Day 5

Today is dedicated to the amazing Landmannalaugar highlands area. The area is known for its colorful landscape and stunning views as well as the warm river that runs through the area so don't forget your bathing suit! On your way to and from Landmannalaugar you will be able to check out other stunning attractions such as Þjófafoss waterfall, mt. Hekla, Háifoss waterfall, and the Commonwealth farm one of Iceland's many active volcanoes.

Day 6

You will now head to the South coast. Your first scheduled stop will be at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Take the opportunity to walk behind it for a unique view and some amazing photos. You will then proceed passed the famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier to the picturesque waterfall Skógafoss before heading to the abandoned plane wreck at Sólheimasandur black sand beach. A little further east you can see the beautiful basalt columns of Reynisfjara and witness the awe-inspiring power of the North Atlantic ocean pounding on the rocks.

Day 7

After breakfast you'll head further East. Your first visit will be to the famous Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. You will head to Skaftafell geopark and Vatnajökull national park, where you can hike to the stunning Svartifoss waterfall and perhaps also to one of the outlet glaciers in the area. Afterwards you can head to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. There you can go for an optional boat ride on the lagoon and sail between the enormous ice bergs that float slowly to the North Atlantic ocean. You can also join a glacier walk on Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's biggest glacier. You will now continue heading East to the town of Höfn. There you will visit Vestrahorn mountain before settling in for the night.

Day 8

Today you will start your return drive back to the Western part of Iceland and end the day in the town of Vík. You will however start your day by driving a little bit further East and visit the stunning Vestrahorn mountain. After that you will start your journey back. Along the way you can visit any attractions you might have missed out on along the South coast. Other attractions can be visited as well and we recommend a visit to Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon which is located not far from Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

Day 9

You can start your day by going for an optional glacier hike at Sólheimajökull glacier before heading back towards Reykjavík. On your way to Reykjavík you can make a stop in the town of Hveragerði and go for a hike to Reykjadalur valley and bathe in the geothermal river running through it. You can also take a detour and visit the famous Blue Lagoon near Grindavík and explore the beautiful attractions on the Reykjanes peninsula and geopark.

Please note that tickets to the Blue Lagoon are very limited and we recommend booking well in advance. You will spend your final night in Reykjavík or Keflavík area.

Departure from Keflavík airport and car rental return. Depending on your departure time you can explore Reykjavík a little further.
