A 9 day Westfjords and West Iceland self drive road trip!
On this 9 day Westfjords and West Iceland self drive road trip you will embark on a journey to some of the most remote villages and areas in Iceland.
The Westfjords hide great attractions and beautiful tiny villages. The Westfjords of Iceland were named one of the top 10 regions to travel in 2022 by Lonely Planet. Dramatic landscapes, secluded villages, rugged mountain ranges, dirt roads, and deep fjords, are some of the areas landmarks. If you are looking to leave the masses behind, the Westfjords are where you want to go.
On your way to and from the Westfjords you will explore the Western side of the island. Snæfellsnes peninsula geopark offers a stunning day of exploration, glacier, lava fields, lava caves, sea cliffs, and craters. The peninsula is often called “miniature Iceland” for the abundance of attractions it holds. The Borgarnes area is full of history and beautiful natural attractions.

Today is your arrival day in Iceland. When you have gone through the arrival gate, you will collect your rental car and start your Iceland journey. Your first night will be in Reykjavík city so you can use this day to explore the city and what it has to offer.
If you are looking to visit the Blue lagoon, we highly recommend doing so when you arrive. It is a very good feeling to rejuvenate your body and soul in the warm water after a long flight to Iceland.

The amazing natural beauty of the Snæfellsnes peninsula awaits - You will start your day by driving to Borganes, a small town located in the Borgarfjörður fjord. From there you will drive through the lava fields of Eldborgarhraun where you can take a short hike up to the Eldborg crater. You will then proceed to drive along the south coast of the peninsula to Búðir, Arnarstapi and Hellnar. Close by you can add an optional caving expedition to Vatnshellir cave. After a refreshing stop there you will enter the Snæfellsnes National Park and drive under the Snæfellsjökull glacier. If conditions are good and you are driving a 4x4 car, it is possible to drive up to the glacier's edge and take a walk on the ice cap. You will continue along the Snæfellsnes peninsula visiting Lóndrangar basalt cliffs, Djúpalónssandur beach and Dritvík cove, Malarrif lighthouse, and Kirkjufell mountain. If time allows, you can visit Bjarnarhöfn shark museum and learn everything there is to know about how the famous fermented shark is made.
You will spend the night in the Snæfellsnes area.

Today you will start your journey around the Westfjords of Iceland. You have the option of taking the ferry Baldur from Stykkishólmur across Breiðafjörður fjord, the fjord of 1000 islands, to Brjánslækur or you can drive around visiting the Reykhólar area and driving along the beautiful coastline. We highly recommend the boat tour across as it is a very beautiful crossing and it shortens the drive a whole lot.
Today you will visit attractions like Rauðasandur beach, and Látrabjarg, one of Europe's largest bird cliffs, before settling in at your accommodations for the night.

Continue along the fjords of the West and visit tiny secluded towns and some beautiful attractions.
Today you will visit Reykjafjarðalaug geothermal pool, Dynjandi waterfall, and the tiny towns of Tálknafjörður, Bíldudalur, Þingeyri, Flateyri, Suðureyri, before settling in at your accommdations in the Ísafjörður area.

You can spend today relaxing in the town of Ísafjörður and exploring this beautiful capital of the Westfjords.
Today you will also take a short drive over to the town of Bolungarvík where you can visit Mount. Bolafjall viewpoint for a spectacular view over Ísafjarðardjúp and Jökulfirðir fjords. Some people say that on a bright, clear day, you can even see all the way to Greenland.

You will now drive along the deep fjords of the Ísafjarðardjúp way. The deep fjords hide some very beautiful views and attractions. On the way you will drive through the town of Súðavík before continuing on to Hvítanes seal spot where seals are usually resting on rocks very close to shore. Close by is a small farm called Litlibær. There you can enter the tiny house and learn about it's history from the time it was built and how people lived in the very secluded small farm. Next you will continue along the deep fjords and driving by historical areas and Reykjaneslaug geothermal pool before leaving the Ísafjarðadjúp area.
You will settle in for the night in the Hólmavík / Drangsnes area.

You will now explore the isolated fjords, and residents along the Strandir area. You will drive along a dirt road today and the scenery is spectacular! You will start the day by driving to Bjarnafjörður fjord before continuing onwards on the rugged dirt road to the historical village of Djúpavík and the abandoned herring factory. Continuing onwards will lead you past villages and factories that used to be teaming with life but are now abandoned or only a shadow of their former self's in the early 19th century. Stunning natural attractions like Reykjaneshyrna mountain and Tafla mountain offer great hiking options. Norðurfjörður and Krossneslaug geothermal pool is where the road ends and you need to turn back. In Norðurfjörður you can find a nice café and a grocery store that is operated there during summer.
Árneshreppur the least populous municipality in Iceland, with only 53 inhabitants. It stretches over a wide area, though, covering some 780 km2. The population density is thus only 0, 07 individuals per km2.
You will settle in for the night in the Hólmavík / Drangsnes area.

Today you will explore the Borgarfjörður area. You will start by leaving the the Westfjords heading South and drive down to the Ring road (road 1). In the Borgarfjörður area you will explore beautiful natural attractions and visit one of Iceland's most historic places, Reykholt. Attractions of the day include Deildartunguhver hot springs, Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls, and Surtshellir lava caves. After your exploration of the Borgarfjörður are, you will drive back to Reykjavík city where you will spend your last night in Iceland.
Your accommodations will be in the Reykjavík area.
