Day 1

Arrival at Keflavík airport. Pick up your rental car at the airport and start your adventure. After you have picked up your rental car head along the lava fields of Reykjanes peninsula to Reykjavík where you will spend your first night. Km driven: 50

Day 2

You will start your day by driving across Hellisheiði towards the village of Hveragerði. Hellisheiði is known for its steam plumes that reach high in the air. Hellisheiði geothermal power plant is located just on the side of the road. There you can take an optional tour and learn how naturally hot water and steam pressure that rise from the earth are used to create eco-friendly electricity. When you arrive in Hveragerði, you will take a short hike (approx. 1hr up and 50 min down) in Reykjadalur valley towards the geothermal river running through the valley where you can take a warm relaxing bath under the open air. Once you return to your car you will start your journey around the famous Golden Circle. Your first stop will be at Þingvellir National park a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can add an optional snorkeling session in Silfra and swim between two tectonic plates, North American and Eurasian. Next up is the spouting hot spring Strokkur in Haukadalur valley before heading to the picturesque waterfall Gullfoss, where you can take a leisurely walk down to the cascading river and take in the stunning view. You will then drive along to your accommodation which will be in the Hella area. Km driven: 263

Day 3

After breakfast, you will make your way on the beautiful South Coast. The Coast is known for its endless black sand beaches on one hand side and volcanoes that lay dormant ready to awaken and erupt at any time under large glacier ice caps on the other. Your first stop will be at Seljalandsfoss waterfall where it is possible to walk behind the falling water for a unique photo opportunity. You will then proceed to Skógafoss waterfall just a short drive away. On the way you will drive past Eyjafjallajökull glacier where the famous eruption that stopped the world took place in 2010. At Skógafoss you can walk to the top of the waterfall for an amazing view. Next up is a stroll to the famous plane wreck at Sólheimasandur. On the way you will pass Sólheimajökull glacier where it is possible to go for optional glacier hike and/or climb. Final stop of the day will be Reynisfjara a black sand beach near the town of Vík. There you can see Dyrhólaey, a 120 meter high promontory and Reynisdrangar, basalt sea stacks that stand just outside the shore. Your accommodation for the night will be around the Vík / Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. Km driven: 150

Day 4

Today you will head to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and see the magnificent icebergs that crumble from the Vatnajökull glacier and slowly float towards the North Atlantic Ocean. On the way, you can stop at the beautiful area of Skaftafell located in the Vatnajökull national park, the largest national park in Europe. Skaftafell is crowned by majestic mountains and glaciers. A walk up to Svartifoss or Black waterfall will not betray anyone. At Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon an optional boat ride on the lagoon is available upon request. An optional glacier walk on the mighty Vatnajökull glacier is also available if you feel up to it. You can also choose to ride a boat on Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon which is located a few kilometers south of Jökulsárlón. You will then proceed Eastbound to the charming village of Höfn where you will spend the night. Km driven: 205

Day 5

On this day you will enter the east fjords of Iceland and their majestic mountain ranges. You will drive towards the town of Djúpivogur which is a part of the Cittaslow movement (http://www.cittaslow.org/network/djupivogur). There you can walk around town and enjoy a variety of artwork and collections from locals. Around the Djúpivogur area there are many interesting places to stop by and visit. Afterwards you will drive to Breiðdalsvík a tiny fishing village where you have the option to go fishing on a small fishing vessel. You will then drive to Stöðvarfjörður where you can stop and take a look at Petra’s world famous stone & mineral collection. The last drive of this day will be towards Fáskrúðsfjörður where you will stay for the night. Before settling in for the night you can take a walk around this beautiful fishing village and take a look at the Auroras Iceland museum (Admission is included in price). Km driven: 210

Day 6

Today you will explore the highlands of East Iceland. You will drive from Fáskrúðsfjörður towards Egilsstaðir and head to Snæfell, the highest point in Iceland not covered by an ice cap. On your way to Snæfell you can stop at Skriðuklaustur center of culture and history and Snæfellsstofa visiting center and get introduced to the area and it’s story. Next to Snæfell is the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant. On your way back you can stop at Laugafell mountain cabin, have coffee, and bathe in the warm pools. You will retire for the evening in Egilsstaðir area. Please note that during winter, may change slightly if the roads to the highlands are impassible. Km driven: 290

Day 7

Take the day early and start the day with a visit to the stunning Stuðlagil canyon. After your visit there, you will head over the highlands towards the waterfall Dettifoss with a stop at the haunted Möðruvellir in the highlands. After your stop at Dettifoss you will visit the horseshoe shaped canyon Ásbyrgi. There you can go for short easy hikes and enjoy the magnificent landscape. Then you will proceed to the town Húsavík where you can go for an optional whale watching tour and visit to the whale museum. A horse riding tour can also be arranged in the area. Enjoy a relaxing evening in Húsavík and spend the night.Km driven: 250

Day 8

After breakfast you will head to lake Mývatn. The area is a geological wonder and home of the still active volcano Krafla. There are many amazing hiking trails in the area and we recommend a visit to the popular Jarðböðin Nature bath. You will then head to the beautiful waterfall Goðafoss before heading to the capital of North Iceland, Akureyri. There you can go for an optional whale watching tour. You will spend the night in Akureyri. Km driven: 150

Day 9

Today’s journey will take you off the beaten track to Tröllaskagi peninsula. The majestic mountain range provides stunning sceneries and charming fishing villages with rich culture and amazing history. It is truly an amazing drive as you will literally drive through the mountains into an isolated fjord that is relatively untouched by human activity. You will spend the night in the Skagafjörður area. Km driven: 185

Day 10

You are now headed to Vatnsnes peninsula where you will take a peek at Hvítserkur, a sea stack just of the coast. Legend has it that the rock formation is a petrified troll that got caught in the sun. You will then head toward Snæfellsnes peninsula national park which is sometimes called “miniature Iceland” for it’s amazing sights. In Stykkishólmur you can go for an exciting sightseeing/tasting boat trip and taste scallops, sea urchin straight from the ocean. You can also add an optional caving expedition to Vatnshellir cave near the small village of Hellnar. You will be staying in the Snæfellsnes area for the night. Km driven: 310

Day 11

Today you will be heading towards the Borgarfjörður area. There you will visit the magical Reykholt and the area of Húsafell, which is known for it´s extreme beauty where, lava fields, hot springs, waterfalls, caves and glaciers can be explored. Km driven: 185

Day 12

You will start making your way to Reykjavík where you will spend your final nights. Drive the magnificent Hvalfjörður and hike to the waterfall Glymur, Iceland’s highest waterfall. You can also check out the whaling station in Hvalfjörður where whales used to be processed for consumption. When you arrive to Reykjavík you can go for optional beer tasting or whale watching. After dinner, you can enjoy the nightlife of Reykjavík. Km driven: 140

Today you can explore Reykjavík. We also recommend a trip to the Blue Lagoon which is only about a 30 minute drive away. Tickets to the lagoon are limited so we recommend booking well in advance.
